Episode 2: The One Thing All Marketers Need to Do Featuring Scott Monty of Ford

Welcome to the second episode of the Marketing Nation Podcast, presented by Marketo and hosted by Marketo’s Digital Marketing Evangelist, DJ Waldow.

Scott Monty joins the Marketing Nation this week to chat with DJ about what Ford is up to online, what's holding marketers back from doing exciting things, and what matters most when hiring a digital marketing or social media staff member.

According to Scott, the state of marketing is shifting to the point where we, as marketers, need to take control and move the industry to the place we want it to be. We don’t need a case study to prove something works; we simply need to try it. In order to do this, we need to extend beyond our natural circles and beyond our comfort zones to make it the nimble, fast-moving industry that it promised to be. This will ensure that they entire industry can move forward.

In an interesting conversation about social media personnel, Scott divulged that he was not prepared to handle social media when he first started at Ford because he didn't have a traditional degree in social media or digital marketing. Instead, he dove head first into the ecosystem, learned as he went, and kept his ideas fresh and interesting for the people who would be purchasing his products.

Scott gave a shout out to a new program called Mustang Inspires, which is pulled from the idea that the Ford Mustang allows you to be your most free self. The website will aggregate people’s tweets and Instagrams using the hashtag #MustangInspires. He is also working on an influencer relationship management system called Connect Ford that allows Ford to identify who is interacting with their content and what they’re most interested in so that they can share influencer content while also inviting influencers to special Ford events depending on what they’re interested in.
